The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that JEE Main 2027 Session 1 will be held from 22 to 30 January 2027, and the registration form is expected to open by the end of October 2026. If you are in Class 12 (or passed Class 12 recently) and want a seat in an NIT, IIIT or other centrally funded institute, or want to qualify for JEE Advanced, this is the form to watch.

This guide covers the dates announced so far, what to keep ready before the form opens, the expected fees, and the mistakes that most often get forms rejected.

JEE Main 2027 key dates

Event Date Status
Session 1 registration opens By end of October 2026 Expected
Session 1 exam 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027 (31 January buffer) Announced by NTA
Session 1 result February 2027 Expected
Session 2 registration February 2027 Expected
Session 2 exam April 2027 Announced (month only)

Past cycles give a good sense of timing: Session 1 registration opened on 1 November 2023, 28 October 2024 and 31 October 2025. Check jeemain.nta.nic.in daily from 25 October, because the window is usually open for only about four weeks.

Who can apply

  • Students who passed Class 12 (or equivalent) or are appearing in the 2027 board exams can apply.
  • JEE Main itself has no minimum percentage. The well-known 75% rule (65% for SC/ST), or a top-20-percentile board score, applies only at admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, not to sitting the exam.
  • Age limits and the number of years since passing Class 12 are fixed in the official information bulletin, so read that section carefully when it is published.

Expected application fee

NTA has not yet released the 2027 fee. Last year’s fee for one paper in one session, for centres in India, was:

Category Fee (one paper)
General (male) Rs 1,000
Gen-EWS / OBC-NCL (male) Rs 900
Female (General, EWS, OBC) Rs 800
SC / ST / PwD / Transgender Rs 500

You can pay online by net banking, debit or credit card, or UPI. Keep the payment receipt; the form is not complete until the fee is paid.

Documents to keep ready now

Getting these ready before the window opens saves you from last-minute errors.

  • Aadhaar card (the name and date of birth should match your Class 10 certificate exactly).
  • Active mobile number and email that you will keep using until admissions are over. All OTPs and NTA notices go here.
  • Class 10 certificate (for date of birth and name).
  • Class 12 marksheet, or your Class 12 admit card or school ID if you are appearing in 2027.
  • Category certificate (EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) if applicable. OBC-NCL and EWS certificates must be valid for the current financial year, so apply for a fresh one now if yours is old.
  • PwD certificate if applicable.

Last year’s upload specifications, likely to stay similar:

Upload Format Size
Photograph (recent, white background, ears visible) JPG/JPEG 10 KB to 200 KB
Signature (black ink on white paper) JPG/JPEG 10 KB to 100 KB
Category / PwD certificate PDF 50 KB to 300 KB

How to fill the JEE Main 2027 form, step by step

  1. Go to jeemain.nta.nic.in and click the Session 1 registration link.
  2. Register with your mobile number and email, and verify both with OTPs. Note down your application number and password.
  3. Fill personal details: name, parents’ names, date of birth, category, and identity details, exactly as on your documents.
  4. Fill academic details: Class 10 and Class 12 board, year and school.
  5. Choose the paper (Paper 1 B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A B.Arch, Paper 2B B.Planning) and the medium of the question paper.
  6. Pick four exam cities in order of preference. Choose cities you can actually reach early on exam day.
  7. Upload photo, signature and certificates in the right format and size.
  8. Pay the fee and download the confirmation page. Save a PDF and print one copy.

Exam pattern to expect (Paper 1)

The 2026 cycle followed this pattern, and NTA will confirm the 2027 pattern in the bulletin.

Subject Questions Marks
Physics 25 100
Chemistry 25 100
Mathematics 25 100
Total 75 300
  • Duration: 3 hours.
  • +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer, in both multiple-choice and numerical-value questions. Unanswered questions score zero.
  • Each subject has 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical questions, all compulsory.

Common mistakes that cause trouble later

  • Name or date of birth mismatch with Class 10 records. This can block your admission even after a good score.
  • Wrong category, or a category certificate that is out of date at counselling time.
  • Blurred or casual photos (selfies, caps, dark glasses). NTA can reject them.
  • Using a parent’s or cyber café’s phone number that you won’t have later.
  • Waiting for the last day. The site slows down near the deadline, and payments can fail.

Should you write both sessions?

Yes, if you can. NTA counts your better score of the two sessions for the rank list, so Session 2 in April is a free second chance. Many students use January as a real-exam rehearsal and improve noticeably by April. Register for Session 1 now; you can apply for Session 2 when its window opens in February.
