CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026, a little over five weeks away. Most aspirants spend these weeks on mocks, which is right. But this is also the best time to build a sensible list of MBA colleges, because several application deadlines fall before or soon after CAT, and colleges outside the IIMs often need separate forms.
A good shortlist saves money on application fees, stops you from missing deadlines, and helps you stay calm after the exam because you already know where you stand. Here is a simple way to build one.
Key dates for MBA aspirants
| Exam or event | Date | Status |

| NMAT 2026 testing window | 2 Nov to 20 Dec 2026 | Official (GMAC) |
| CAT 2026 admit card | Around 4 Nov 2026 | Expected |
| CAT 2026 exam | 29 Nov 2026 | Scheduled |
| XAT 2027 registration closes | 6 Dec 2026 | As reported |
| XAT 2027 exam | 3 Jan 2027 | As reported |
| CAT 2026 result | First week of January 2027 | Expected |
| NIRF 2026 management ranking | Not yet released | Awaited |
Always confirm dates on the official sites (iimcat.ac.in, xatonline.in and the NMAT site) before paying any fee.
Step 1: Start from what you want after the MBA
Before you look at any ranking, write down three things:
- The role you want. Consulting, finance, marketing, product, operations, HR or a family business all point to different colleges.
- Your budget. Top IIM fees run into lakhs, and the total cost (fees plus living) varies widely between colleges and cities.
- Where you would like to work. Regional colleges often have strong local recruiter networks.
A college that ranks well overall may not be the best for your goal. Some institutes are known for finance, others for HR or rural management.
Step 2: Use NIRF as a starting filter, not a final answer
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), run by the Ministry of Education, is the most widely used public ranking of Indian B-schools. The 2026 management list has not been released yet. Until it is, the latest official list is NIRF 2025, announced on 4 September 2025.
NIRF 2025: Top 10 management institutes
| Rank | Institute |
|---|---|
| 1 | IIM Ahmedabad |
| 2 | IIM Bangalore |
| 3 | IIM Kozhikode |
| 4 | IIT Delhi (Department of Management Studies) |
| 5 | IIM Lucknow |
| 6 | IIM Mumbai |
| 7 | IIM Calcutta |
| 8 | IIM Indore |
| 9 | MDI Gurugram |
| 10 | XLRI Jamshedpur |
A few points worth knowing:
- IIM Ahmedabad has topped the management list for six years in a row.
- Seven of the top 10 are IIMs, but IIT Delhi, MDI and XLRI show that strong options exist outside the IIM system.
- NIRF scores institutes on Teaching, Learning and Resources (40%), Research (20%), Graduation Outcomes (15%), Outreach and Inclusivity (15%) and Peer Perception (10%).
Notice that research carries real weight in NIRF. A research-heavy institute can rank above one with better placements for your target role. That is why NIRF is a filter, not the final answer.
You can browse a wider list of MBA colleges by NIRF ranking on TopMBAColleges to go beyond the top 10.
Step 3: Check placements properly
Placement figures are the most quoted and the most misunderstood numbers in MBA admissions.
- Use the median, not the highest package. One international offer says little about what a typical student gets.
- Read the official placement report, ideally one audited or prepared to a common standard. Many top B-schools publish these.
- Look at the sector split. If 40% of a batch went to consulting and you want marketing, check how many went to marketing roles.
- Check batch size. A median from a batch of 60 and a batch of 600 tell different stories.
Step 4: Match cutoffs to your realistic score
Build your list in three groups based on your recent mock percentiles:
- Ambitious (3 to 4 colleges): cutoffs slightly above your mock average.
- Realistic (4 to 6 colleges): cutoffs around your mock average.
- Safe (2 to 3 colleges): cutoffs comfortably below your mock average.
Remember that IIM shortlists do not depend on the CAT percentile alone. Most IIMs also weigh Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation scores, work experience, gender and academic diversity. If your academics are weaker, older IIMs with heavy weight on past marks may be harder, while some newer IIMs and private colleges place more weight on the exam score.
Step 5: Do not forget non-CAT exams
Several strong colleges admit through other exams:
- XAT is used by XLRI and many other private B-schools. XAT 2027 is reported for 3 January 2027, with registration closing on 6 December 2026.
- NMAT is used by NMIMS and several other institutes. The NMAT 2026 testing window runs from 2 November to 20 December 2026, conducted by GMAC.
- SNAP, CMAT and MAT open more options, especially for students targeting specific cities or budgets.
If you are giving CAT anyway, adding one more exam is a cheap way to widen your options. TopMBAColleges has an XAT exam guide that covers pattern and accepting colleges.
Step 6: Compare total cost and return
For every college on your list, note:
- Total programme fee (not just the first-year fee)
- Hostel and living costs in that city
- Median salary from the latest placement report
- Scholarships or need-based fee waivers offered
A rough check: if total cost is far higher than one year of median salary, look closely at whether the college’s outcomes justify it for your goal. Many institutes offer need-based aid, and education loans are widely available for top B-schools, but debt is easier to manage when the salary outcome is realistic.
Step 7: Keep a simple tracker
Make one spreadsheet with these columns: college, exam accepted, application deadline, fee, form status, shortlist result and interview date. Update it every Sunday. Missing a deadline for a college you wanted is the most avoidable mistake in the whole process.
A sample shortlist structure
Here is how a balanced list might look for a candidate with a mock average around the 90th percentile (illustrative only):
- Ambitious: two or three IIMs with cutoffs above their mock average
- Realistic: newer IIMs, IIT management schools and strong private colleges accepting CAT
- Safe: private colleges through XAT, NMAT or CAT with lower cutoffs
- Back-up: one or two colleges through a different exam window
Your own list will depend on your academics, work experience and goals, so treat this only as a shape to follow.
FAQs
When will NIRF 2026 management rankings be released?
The Ministry of Education has not released them yet. NIRF 2025 came out on 4 September 2025, so the 2026 list is overdue. Use the 2025 ranks until then.
How many colleges should I apply to after CAT?
Most aspirants do well with 10 to 15 colleges across ambitious, realistic and safe groups. More than that usually wastes fees.
Is NIRF rank the best way to choose an MBA college?
It is a useful starting point, but it includes research and other factors. Check median placements, sector split and fees for your own goal.
Do IIMs shortlist only on CAT percentile?
No. Most IIMs combine CAT score with Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation, work experience and diversity factors. Each IIM publishes its own criteria.
Should I write XAT or NMAT along with CAT?
If you are targeting private B-schools like XLRI or NMIMS, yes. It adds options at a small extra cost.
When is the CAT 2026 admit card expected?
Around 4 November 2026, on iimcat.ac.in. Watch the official site for the exact date.
